Answer
Red zones are no stopping or standing - just don't put your car there. If you get hit by another car in a red zone, you could be liable even though the other guy hit you (that is why they painted the curb red. . .). Red curbs also mark most bus stops as well - stopping there for only a second to drop off someone (unless you happen to be driving a city bus) will get you a particularly large moving violation.
Parking in a drive lane is also very illegal here (this is called double parking). No matter what 'they allow' in your hometown, double parking is a huge ticket in California). Yes, they might even refer to this as 'standing' in your home town - we still call it double parking, and we will ticket. |
Yellow zones are for loading and unloading people and freight (stuff). (UPS or USPS guy, furniture store, office deliveries. . .)
Don't ever leave your passenger car in a yellow zone unless a sign allows such parking after business hours.
(Some yellow zones are 24-hour zones, some are not). |
Green zones are for limited-timed parking. The curb or a sign will give instructions, or possibly a meter will limit the time. You CANNOT add money to a meter once you park for the maximum time. (Police and parking enforcement are watching your car - MOVE the car entirely off the block to avoid the fine.) Parking at broken meters is a risk that you really should avoid, though if you must park there, be sure to call the 1-800 number on the meter and report the meter broken.
Be sure not to park at the broken meter longer than the meter would allow if it were working. . . |
Blue curbs are for disabled parking only. If you are disabled, go to the DMV and obtain a disabled parking placard. Keep the placard in your glove box unless you are actually parking in a disabled spot. Do not use a parking placard that does not belong to you or to someone currently riding in the car. The car is not disabled. . . the person to whom the placard was issued is disabled. The fine for using a disabled placard illegally is HUGE, and can be a criminal offense. (As it should be - shame on you!)
Do NOT drive your car with the placard hanging from your mirror - that will get you a ticket too - it also blocks your view of any car approaching yours from that direction. . . |
