- Plan out a driving routine with your teen. Schedule your lessons in advance or if you are practicing with your teen between lessons, then you can spread them out over the six month training period, saving a final lesson for closer to when they take the test. If you are driving less with them it is best to schedule more lessons.
- Remember, if you are driving with your child for the first time, the accelerator will be more sensitive than they first realize,
as well as the brake. Remember, they should keep their heel on the ground and switch between both pedals.
- Do you drive a powerful luxury sedan? Start out practicing in an empty parking lot. A great way to learn better control of the accelerator and brake is from practicing the ins and outs of parking. It's a great way to start out, and very easy to transition from parking to street driving.
- Don't be too nervous! It's ok to be wary of things around youand to be worried about your safety and others. It's important to remember that your child has less practical experience driving a car than you. They will be scared, but it is important not to frighten them any more. Remind them that paying attention will help prevent dangerous things from happening. Remember your first time driving?
- Don't get mad at mistakes! Correct them and keep practicing. When you have a
lesson scheduled make sure
the instructor is aware of any issues that may require practice. Our driving instructors work
best when they are aware of any experience a student may have had prior to the lesson.
New drivers, it's important that you practice during safe hours. This traffic map shows your area and if you click on the image, it will show what streets currently look like traffic wise. Red streets mean heavier traffic, and that you should maybe wait to practice. Green Streets mean its clear, and a great time to go out for a practice drive! Or schedule a lesson with Westwood Driving School.
